I also went there today and yes it is closed. I understand that it is being converted to a pay and display and have no idea when it will be open. I backtracked turned left into Coniston and turned left past the Bull, the road takes you past the brewery. I parked on the lane before the no parking signs and walked the lane in the direction of the YHA and Coppermines Valley. Veer off to the left for The 'Old Man'

Hi Zwearman, the A593 is the most direct route to Coniston but I would not attempt a walk from Ambleside as it is a 4-hour walk each way from town to town. The road is very narrow in places and is really quite unsuitable for walking. I would catch the bus from Ambleside to Coniston then start your walk.

Too far from Ambleside. Find a way to Langdale or Elterwater and do it from there. Walk covered in Wainwright Southern Fells book 4.
