The inaugural ceremony celebrated the top songwriters and performers of Regional Mexican music, reflecting the explosive growth of the genre and Ortiz’s current leadership of it.

Corrido singer Gerardo Ortiz was the top winner at the inaugural Billboard Mexican Music Awards on Oct. 20 in Los Angeles, taking home six awards, including Artist of the Year; Artist of the Year, Male; Artist of the Year, New; and Album of the Year for Ni Hoy Ni Mañana.
