Abdomen is more rounded (tapered rearward) than in Argiope aurantia, does not have notches and humps as in that species. Legs are spotted. Stabilimentum of web is similar to that of Argiope aurantia, but less prominent.

These spiders have a distinct appearance, with the females measuring between 13-14.5 millimeters in length, and the males being about one third the size.

The banded, or white-backed garden spider is slightly smaller than the black-and-yellow garden spider and has a pointier hind end. The abdomen is patterned with many thin silver and yellow transverse lines and thicker black, spotty lines.

Similar to yellow garden spiders, banded garden spiders are not known to be medically important. It is unlikely that bites would occur unless people handled a female with an egg sac in the web. Even then, the bite would likely cause no more discomfort …

The banded garden spider may be found throughout Illinois. It builds large, orb webs in grasses and other herbaceous plants in sunny areas. It may be found in the same places as the similar black and yellow garden spider but tends to place its web closer to the ground. Adults appear in late August or early September.
