2024年1月31日 · Nebraskans endured a siege of blizzards beginning in November and lasting through March. Each blizzard brought heavy snow, screaming winds, and brutal cold. Snow piled up so high in spots it covered houses, crippled transportation, and trapped cattle in the elements. It took a massive federal government operation to dig out those stranded finally.

2020年1月7日 · It all started on November 18, 1948. Snow blanketed a wide swath of central to northeastern Nebraska. Up to 24 inches fell, shutting down roads and trains. Phone service went out, and many people were stranded away from home. Understandably, many Nebraskans figured that this would be the worst they'd see that winter. But it was far from over.

The Blizzard of 1949 is considered one of the worst on record for the northern Plains. The first storm began January 2 and continued through January 5, with heavy snow, strong winds and cold temperatures. Subsequent storms through mid-February produced enormous snow drifts that paralyzed much of the region.

So much stifling, smothering snow fell from November to April that survivors’ memories of individual storms blur into one monstrous meteorological event, the Blizzard of 1948-1949. Nebraskans were enjoying a mild autumn when thunderstorms turned to sleet and snow near Sidney on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1948.

It was the worst blizzard in recorded history. A series of storms began in November of 1948 and continued straight through to February of 1949. The snow stopped trains, buried houses, and threatened nearly a million head of cattle. Operation Haylift was a massive, perhaps desperate, effort to save livestock.
