Located within the heart of Florida's Big Cypress Basin, Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge protects core habitat for the endangered Florida panther and all native wildlife who roam within the apex predator’s habitats.

what is now the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. Logging of the cypress started in 1944, in response to wartime needs, at a rate of one million board feet per week. Destructive wildfires followed the logging operations, further altering the habitat. Many plant species were diminished, such as the beautiful ghost and cigar orchids.

The guest hunter and permitted hunter must enter and exit the refuge together and must share an ORV while scouting or hunting on the refuge. The hunt party must share the bag. Hunting regulations are designed to protect wildlife populations and the sportsman.

Open for free, seven days a week, during daylight hours sunrise-sunset, two trails provide visitors with a chance to experience a variety of habitats on Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. The trails are located about a quarter mile north of the intersection of State Road 29 and I-75.
