2009年10月16日 · Irving Penn, a master of American portraiture and fashion photography has always intrigued me by using the same sober backgrounds to photograph most of his subjects—beautiful Vogue models (like his wife of 42 years, Lisa Fonssagrives, below) or these seriously covered Moroccan women.

Irving Penn (June 16, 1917 – October 7, 2009) [1] was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine, and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake and Clinique .

During the 1990s, Penn made several nude and semi-nude black-and-white portraits of supermodels 6 and also made several nude photographs of truncated bodies. For example, Sitting Nude Rear, New York (1993) shows the trim back muscles of an anonymous female model whose head does not appear in the photograph.

In his portrait of Marlene Dietrich, Irving Penn controls Dietrich’s presentation thereby manipulating her identity and imposing an unwarranted sense of shame onto her body forcing her to conform to the myth of the midcentury American woman.

This 8mm film footage, shot by Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn in 1971, shows Irving Penn at work in his portable studio on location in Morocco. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Irving Penn: Centennial,” on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from April 24 through July 30, 2017.
