Ithkuil uses a morphophonemic script because characters convey both phonetic and morphological information. (Notably, it has no alphabet as such.) Its use is closely tied to Ithkuil's grammatical system, which allows much of the phonological aspect of words to be morpho-syntactically inferred.

Due to the inadequacies of the Roman alphabet in transliterating the large number of phonemes (meaningful sounds) in Ithkuil, the following diacritics are necessary for a phonemic Romanization system: the acute, grave and circumflex accents, the umlaut or dieresis, the cedilla, a superposed dot, and the apostrophe.
