Slime mold or slime mould is an informal name given to a polyphyletic assemblage of unrelated eukaryotic organisms in the Stramenopiles, Rhizaria, Discoba, Amoebozoa and Holomycota clades. Most are microscopic; those in the Myxogastria form larger plasmodial slime molds visible to the naked eye.

The slime moulds (spelt molds in America) are not a monophyletic group but at least three very different groups of organisms, sometimes collectively placed under the heading Eumycetozoa. Nowhere near as plentiful as fungi species (which run in to millions worldwide), slime mould species known to science certainly number in excess of 1000.

Long classified together in the Myxomycophyta as part of the Fungi, slime "molds" are now known to be quite unrelated to the fungi. There are three main groups of slime molds, which do not form a clade. Plasmodial slime molds, like Physarum shown here, are basically enormous single cells with thousands of nuclei.

Slime molds cause very little damage. The plasmodium ingests bacteria, fungal spores, and maybe other smaller protozoa. Their ingestion of food is one reason slime molds are not considered to be fungi. Fungi produce enzymes that break down organic matter into chemicals that are absorbed through their cell walls, not ingested.

Slime molds are fungus-like organisms that have previously been classified as fungi, but they are no longer classified as fungi. Depending on the sources, there are now two or three diferent groups of slime molds, one of which is the Myxomycetes. These now fall under the broader category of eukarya.
