The Great Lakes account for one fifth of the world's supply of surface fresh water, and Michigan is home to four of the five of these magnificent bodies of water.

Water in the Great Lakes flows from Lake Superior, into Lake Huron, into Lake Michigan, into Lake Erie, into Lake Ontario, and into the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. There are about 35,000 islands in the Great Lakes, many of which are inhabited.
