Honestly, in my opinion, Sonic's apparent fear of water is simply a played-for-laughs trait, sourced from- and poking fun at- the many deaths a player will inevitably suffer due to drowning in one of these water levels.

In several adaptations we can see that Sonic is afraid of water (mainly in Sonic X, created by Sonic Team itself), but was there ever mention of him having this fear in games (not counting Lego Dimensions), manuals or in Sonic Channel materials?
