I'm sure there are tons of exceptions to my info, but like I said...I've seen a LOT of coal trains over the years. Since 1995, about 95% or more BNSF trains have been solid SD70MAC's with the GE AC's joining the fun later on.

Watching coal trains on the former NP across Montana and North Dakota will not be the same since they have pretty much converted over from the DC powered trains (SD60,SD60M,SD75M) to AC powered trains (SD70MAC,SD70ACe,ES44AC, AC4400CW)-DPU Configuration. Up here on the ex-GN high line at Whitefish, MT, the SD75Ms are pretty much confined to the few unit coal trains that head to Washington state power plants (such as Centralia, WA). Other than that, don't count on seeing any high horsepower SD units (SD60, SD60M, SD70MAC, SD75) - it's SD40-2 and GE territory here.

2017年3月10日 · The SD75Is were built 1994-96 and were the last new locomotives Santa Fe bought as well as some of the first locomotives BNSF recieved. They were fine units, but the BNSF merger probably killed further orders and they got stuck as a small class size as BNSF standardized on EMD AC power and GE DC power.

2024年12月26日 · Coal re-route westbound in 1 degree F temps... Taken somewhere along the Wyoming and South Dakota border. The train is headed south towards Crawford, NE. Renumbered back to its old ATSF number, but now BNSF 212. BNSF 5410 with another C44-9W, and 13 SD75's! The SD75M/I's ID'd in this consist were provided to me by a BNSF Source.

It appears BNSF is in the process of ridding itself of it's #8200-series SD75Ms, the first 51 of which were originally delivered to ATSF just before the merger in 1995. I guess they'll end up as leasers, unless another class I like CN or NS picks them up.
