2012年8月16日 · Crossbreeding experiments with Dexter cattle were done at Cambridge University in 1953 by Sir John Hammond to determine the maternal effect on calf size and development of the offspring. The largest of the British breeds, South Devon, was bred by artificial insemination to Dexter females and South Devon females.

2008年12月8日 · Genebo is the expert on dexter cattle, but my understanding is that the smaller the population, the greater the danger of inbreeding revealing negative traits. Because the population is small, you can't cull aggressively to get rid of unwanted traits. One example would be the bulldog gene.

2009年11月25日 · In most areas, the mini cattle are really high priced (overpriced?), while Dexters are quite reasonable. You should be able to get a good registered Dexter heifer for $1200, and even less if you're willing to take a range heifer and tame her yourself or an unregisterable one. The best part of a Dexter is the temperament.

He didn't think the pure Dexter calves were big enough, so he crossed his Dexter bull with every breed he had on the place: Charolais/Hereford, Highland, Devon and Angus.

The problem is that chondro-carriers produce both non-carrier and carrier offspring and the non-carrier offspring (of carriers within the desired height range) are typically taller than the desired height range at maturity.
