The series is also inspired by, and loosely adapts, various historical events from European history during the Early Middle Ages. During the course of the series, 89 episodes of Vikings aired over six seasons, between March 3, 2013, and December 30, 2020.

The series tells the saga of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes.
