Let's talk about lilac! 💜 Common lilac, Syringa vulgaris, is a pretty ubiquitous plant. Most people can at least recognize the flowers and the smell, so it's a great plant for new foragers to dip their toes into the water that is edible flowers! Lilac can be a small shrub all the way to a small multi-stemmed tree. It's in the olive family, Oleaceae. Its species name, vulgaris, means 'common' or 'widespread'. Lilacs need to be rejuvenation pruned so that the oldest thickest stems are being cut to the base to allow for new growth to come up from the bottom of the plant. Those younger new stems will give you more flowers and they are much more resilient to disease and pests. We prune our lilacs within 2 to 3 weeks of the flowers dying in the spring. I have several lilac pruning videos on my page from last spring that you can check out and I will post more next spring when it’s time. I am a Garden Coach

Love lilacs like I do but struggle with getting the longest life out of them in a vase? We have a few tricks for how we process and harvest lilac for the best possible vase life (hint: it does not include crushing the stem, which we found actually makes it harder for them to uptake water as it closes off some capillaries)! My best tips: 🌸 cut when only just starting to open 🌸cut early in the morning 🌸remove most of the foliage 🌸strip the bark off the bottom several inches and make a slit up
